As you may have heard, Windows 10 will officially reached its end of life on October 14, 2025. After this date, Microsoft no longer offers free security updates, technical support, or non-security updates for this version. While your PC won’t stop working overnight, this means that, without updates, your practice will be more vulnerable to security risks and technical issues.

If you’ve tried upgrading to Windows 11 but your PC didn’t pass the compatibility test, don’t panic. There are still options available to you, and we’re here to help guide you through the best course of action for your practice.

1. Ignore the Deadline (Not Recommended)

While it may be tempting to simply continue using Windows 10 beyond its end-of-life date, this approach comes with significant risks. Without security updates, your PC becomes increasingly vulnerable to cyberattacks—something no veterinary practice can afford. Sensitive patient data, client information, and financial details could be at risk. Additionally, without ongoing technical support, you might face disruptions in your systems that can affect operations and patient care.

Ultimately, ignoring the deadline could lead to costly downtime and potential data breaches, which could damage your practice’s reputation and lead to compliance issues (especially if you’re dealing with healthcare data under HIPAA regulations). This option is risky and should only be considered if you have a reliable alternative to protect your systems.

2. Switch to Linux (For the Tech-Savvy)

If you’re looking for a longer-term solution and you have the technical expertise (or the right IT partner), you can switch your practice’s PC from Windows 10 to Linux. Linux is a free, open-source operating system known for its stability and security, and it can run on many older PCs.

However, keep in mind that switching operating systems is not for the faint of heart. You’ll need to learn how to use Linux and ensure that all the software your practice relies on (including your veterinary practice management tools) is compatible. This is a viable option if you’re comfortable with the potential challenges, but for most veterinary practices, it might be better to explore other options to avoid operational disruptions.

3. Try Upgrading “Incompatible” PCs Using a Technical Workaround

If your PC failed the Windows 11 compatibility test, you might still be able to force the upgrade with a few technical tweaks. Some users have managed to bypass compatibility checks by making minor registry edits and enabling Secure Boot with Trusted Platform Module (TPM).

While it’s possible to upgrade your PC this way, be aware that it’s not without risks. You could end up with an unsupported configuration that voids your manufacturer’s warranty, and Microsoft won’t provide security updates for devices that aren’t officially supported. It’s also important to keep in mind that your practice could face system instability, and you may need extra IT support to get everything running smoothly. If you choose this path, partnering with an IT expert will ensure that your systems stay secure.

4. Pay for Microsoft’s Extended Security Updates (ESUs)

If you need to continue using Windows 10 but don’t want to immediately upgrade your hardware, Microsoft’s Extended Security Updates (ESUs) offer a temporary solution. These subscription-based updates, which will be available until 2028, provide critical security patches for Windows 10 even after support ends.

However, this comes at a cost. For businesses, the subscription starts at $61 per device in the first year, rising to $244 in the third year. This could be a viable option for the short term, but it’s not a long-term solution. The price is significant, and without technical support, you’ll be responsible for handling any operational or software issues that arise.

While this might be useful for veterinary practices looking to delay an upgrade, we recommend weighing the cost against the potential benefits. If you choose this option, make sure you’ve built in a plan for eventually transitioning to Windows 11 or a new system.

5. Purchase a New PC

If your current PC is old or struggling to keep up with your practice’s needs, investing in a new PC that’s compatible with Windows 11 is a great option. Newer computers are faster, more secure, and can handle the demands of modern veterinary practice management systems, patient records, and digital diagnostics.

When purchasing a new device, be sure to back up your important files and data beforehand, so nothing is lost in the transition. A new PC will provide better performance, improved security features, and an overall boost in productivity—something your practice can’t afford to compromise on. If you need assistance with selecting the right equipment, we can help you choose the best solution for your practice’s specific needs.
