If your veterinary practice is still running on Windows 10, now is the time to start planning your next move. Microsoft has officially announced that it will end support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025. That may sound far off, but upgrading your systems takes time—especially when your practice depends on software like Cornerstone, eVet, IDEXX, or other integrated tools to manage day-to-day operations.
This isn’t just a tech update—it’s a business-critical deadline. When Microsoft ends support, Windows 10 will stop receiving security updates, patches, and technical assistance. That means every device still running Windows 10 will be more vulnerable to attacks, outages, and software incompatibility.
Why Windows 10 End-of-Life Matters to Your Practice
1. Security Gaps Put Client Data at Risk
Veterinary practices handle sensitive information—payment records, client emails, insurance details, even HR documents. After October 2025, Windows 10 machines will no longer receive the security updates that keep hackers out. That means cybercriminals will begin actively targeting clinics that haven’t made the switch, exploiting unpatched vulnerabilities to launch ransomware attacks or steal client data.
2. Compatibility Will Break Down
The tools you rely on—practice management software, lab integrations, imaging platforms—are constantly being updated to work with the latest operating systems. Once Windows 10 is retired, developers will stop supporting it. That means software glitches, system crashes, or even total software failure may be right around the corner if you don’t upgrade.
3. You Could Fall Out of Compliance
While veterinary clinics aren’t subject to HIPAA, you may still have cyber insurance policies or data privacy standards to meet. Running unsupported software can violate those agreements—leading to denied claims or non-renewals. Even internal policies or board-level compliance standards could be impacted.
What Are Your Options?
Not all older devices are compatible with Windows 11, so you’ll need to assess your current fleet. If you find devices that can’t be upgraded, here are your options:
- Replace aging workstations with Windows 11–ready machines
- Enroll eligible devices in Microsoft’s Extended Security Updates (ESU) for a limited-time buffer
- Explore temporary Linux-based options (for non-critical workstations)
Whichever option you choose, be sure to back up all practice data first. Patient records, treatment notes, and imaging files should be stored securely before you begin any upgrade or system migration.
What Is Extended Security Update (ESU)?
Microsoft will offer a paid option for Extended Security Updates for one year following the end-of-life date. While this can buy you time, it is not a long-term solution. ESU doesn’t include feature updates or compatibility fixes—it only delivers basic security patches. It’s best used as a stopgap while you prepare your clinic for a full upgrade.
Why You Shouldn’t Wait Until October 2025
Waiting until the last minute could leave you with limited hardware options, scheduling delays, and higher upgrade costs. Worse, you may run out of time to test compatibility with your veterinary software. Windows 11 has stricter hardware requirements, and some legacy tools may need updates or replacements.
Planning ahead gives you time to stagger purchases, train your team, and complete the migration with minimal disruption. And if you work with an experienced IT provider who understands the veterinary space, the entire transition becomes easier, faster, and far less stressful.
